Elmhurst at street level
Elmhurst is small and easy to drive past: Highway 50 and Folsom Boulevard on the north, Stockton Boulevard on the west, the 50s streets on the east, and V Street and Second Avenue on the south. H.A. McClelland bought about 250 acres in 1908 and laid it out as a streetcar subdivision, the city annexed it in 1911, and California Boulevard was renamed as an extension of T Street in 1916. The two grassy strips left from that boulevard are now Sunset Park and Sierra Vista Park, and T Street still runs as a divided parkway with bike lanes on both sides. Street names like Berkeley Way, Buckingham Way, Freeman Way, and Discovery Way break the city's letter-and-number grid. Housing is largely 1920s and 1930s Craftsman bungalows and Tudor cottages with later infill. Renters slightly outnumber owners, and just over half of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher.

Route 38 follows nearly the same path on roughly 30-minute weekday headways. The Gold Line's 48th Street and 39th Street/UC Davis Health stations are both in the neighborhood. T Street carries bike lanes in both directions.
